How Does the Coaching Process Work?

Within organizations, ideally the coaching process is a three-way partnership between the client, the coach and the organization, in which all have agreed to specific goals and parameters. The actual process though, is a one-on-one relationship between the client and the coach.

The following steps usually apply to the coaching process:

  • Step 1 - Coach-Client Agreements
The coach and the client review the issues, questions and steps necessary towards achieving the goals. Together, they arrive at an agreement and contract for the process to begin.
  • Step 2 - Key Stakeholders Agreements
The key stakeholders and supporters in the process are identified. The coach and client ensure that stakeholders understand their roles and the terms of the agreement. Commitments, ground rules, time frames and aligned goals are concluded at this stage. Typically, frequency of stakeholder updates will be established at this time.
  • Step 3 - Confidentiality Agreements
Privacy within the client-coach relationship is a crucial part of the successful coaching outcome. A confidentiality agreement can be developed and signed by all parties.
  • Step 4 - Time Frames and the Coaching Process
Typically, the initial minimum coaching time frame is 3 months. Ideally, the first session or pre-session agreement meetings are conducted in person. Subsequent meetings are done by phone on a weekly or bi-weekly basis for 60 minutes. Often the coaching process will continue beyond the 3-month period and agreements and goals need to be reviewed at that time. At the mid-point of the initial 3 month time frame an in-person meeting and or meetings with key stakeholders are held where practically possible.
  • Step 5 - Coaching Sessions in-between normally scheduled sessions
In order to meet the personal or professional needs of the client as they arise, email and telephone support is available with prior arrangement.
